林徽因是我国现代一位极具特色的作家，也是我国第一位女性建筑学家，被胡适誉为“中国一代才女”。二十世纪三十年代初，林徽因与夫婿梁思成用现代科学方法研究中国古代建筑，成为这一领域的开拓者，取得了巨大的成就。新中国成立以后，林徽因在美术方面曾做过三件大事：参与国徽设计，改造传统景泰蓝，参加人民英雄纪念碑的设计，为民族和国家作出了卓越的贡献。这些成就足以使她留名青史。和建筑学研究相比，文学创作只是她“偶然为之”，数量不多，却字字珠玑，其造诣并不亚于当时的许多名家圣手，在我国现代文坛中占有重要的地位。
