臺灣屏東人，國立臺灣師範大學國文系畢業，曾任編輯和教師。一九七二年初退隱田園，過著晴耕雨讀的平淡生活。熱愛鄉土，所著《田園之秋》一書最為人所知；書中描寫平靜恬淡的鄉村生活令人嚮往，篇章亦被選為國中課本選文。其人博學，精於臺語研究，曾編有《臺語字典》。曾獲中國時報散文推薦獎、吳三連文藝獎。
