本书收录的《海公案》，实际上就是《海公大红袍全传》，是以明代海瑞为原型的一部公案小说。海瑞是我国十六世纪著名的政治家，历经明代四朝。他一生耿直清廉，刚正不阿，极富传奇性。整部小说以海瑞与严嵩的斗争贯穿始终，通过对海瑞的歌颂，一方面表达了作者对海瑞的敬仰，另一方面也代表了平民大众对黑暗腐朽社会的一声呐喊。《海公大红袍全传》传世刻本较多，本书以道光二年业堂刻本为底本，参照他种版本择善而从。
