本書是作者十幾年來造訪各地美術館、古堡、大教堂及藝術家的故居，而抒發其對藝術觀點及人文省思，並在國內報章雜誌上發表所彙集而成的散文集。內容可分為五大單元，包括歐陸遊蹤、英倫掠影、美國散記、亞澳行腳及生活藝談。
本書並非走馬看花的導覽式遊記，而是以世界各地之博物館、美術館及藝術家之行誼為切入點，加以觀察、剖析，不僅有助讀者一窺歐洲文化國寶的內涵，更可提供美術系學生、藝術工作者作為參考的讀物。

福建省永春縣人，早年在廈門美專習畫。臺灣光復後來臺，曾任報社編輯，中學教師、東海大學美術系副教授，致力版畫創作，為臺灣著名木刻版畫家。數度應邀出國展畫，有時也寫文章，著有：《卡卜里島的太陽》、《失去的畫眉》、《雨中行》、《波瓦地葉過客》、《玩具狗》等。
