《中小學生必讀叢書：西廂記》的故事最早起源于唐代詩人元稹的傳奇小說《鶯鶯傳》，在宋金時代流傳甚廣，一些文人、民間藝人紛紛將其改編成說唱和戲劇。《中小學生必讀叢書：西廂記》就是在這些豐富的藝術積累上進行加工創作而成的，講述了張生與崔鶯鶯纏綿悱惻、跌宕起伏的愛情故事，表達了有情人終成眷屬的美好願望。
王實甫，名德信、大都（今北京）人元代雜劇作家，其所作雜劇中名目可考的有十三種，今僅存《崔鶯鶯待月兩廂記》、《呂蒙正風雪破窯記》、《四大王歌舞麗春堂》、《韓采雲絲竹英蓉亭》、《蘇小卿月夜販茶船》五種。其中《西廂記》被譽為“元雜劇的壓卷之作”，與湯顯祖的《牡丹亭》、洪昇的《長生殿》、孔尚任的《桃花扇》並稱為“中國古代四大名劇”。
