傅雷曾受聘于上海美术专科学校，担任美术史课教师。他在讲稿的基础上修订、补充，完成了这部著作。是许多人的西方美术启蒙书，提升艺术修养的专业指南。书中着重介绍文艺复兴以来的数十位美术大师及其名作，生动讲解其艺术风格和人品操守，并融文学、音乐、哲学、社会、时代于一体，深入浅出，引人入胜。
傅雷，字怒安，上海市南汇县人，翻译家、文艺评论家。1928年赴法国研习美术理论与艺术评论。1931年回国，任教于上海美术专科学校。傅雷从20世纪30年代起致力于法国文学的译介工作，译有《高老头》《约翰•克利斯朵夫》《艺术哲学》等，全部译作收录于《傅雷译文集》。文学、美术、音乐等著述收录于《傅雷文集》。书信结集为《傅雷家书》。
