中国之小说自来无史；有之，则先见于外国人所作之中国文学史中，而后中国人所作者中亦有之，然其量皆不及全书之什一，故于小说仍不详。此稿虽专史，亦粗略也。然而有作者，三年前，偶当讲述此史，自虑不善言谈，听者或多不愫，则疏其大要，写印以赋同人；又虑钞（抄）者之劳也，乃复缩为文言，省其举例以成要略，至今用之。
鲁迅，（一八八一年-一九三六年）：浙江绍兴人。原名周树人，字豫山、豫亭，后改名为豫才。一八九八年离开故乡考进南京江南水师学堂；后又转入江南陆师学堂附设的矿路学堂。1902年初毕业后被选派赴日留学，先是学医，后为改变国民精神，弃医从文。1909年八月回国。毛主席评价他是伟大的无产阶级的文学家、思想家、革命家，是中国文化革命的主将，也被人民称为“民族魂”。“鲁迅”是他一九一八年发表我国现代文学史上第一篇白话小说《狂人日记》时所用的笔名。作品有小说集《呐喊》、《彷徨》、《故事新编》；敞文集《朝花夕拾》、《野章》.杂文集《坟》、《热风》、《华盖集》、《华盖集续编》、《且介亭杂文集》、《二心集》、《南腔北调集》等。
