姓叶赫那拉氏，满州镶蓝旗(后招入镶黄旗)，咸丰皇帝的贵妃，同治皇帝的生母。她于咸丰元年(1851年)清宫选秀女入选，次年五月进宫。七年被封为懿贵妃。

1861年咸丰病死，同治即位，她和咸丰皇后都被尊为皇太后。同年十一月，她在恭亲王、醇郡王参与下，发动“北京政变”，杀肃顺等襄政大臣。从此两太后垂帘听政，而实际由慈禧掌握大权。此后，她重用汉臣曾国藩、剿杀了太平军、打击东太后、宠幸小安子、偷情后宫……慈禧的身上笼罩了许许多多的难解之谜。

她经历了咸丰、同治、光绪三朝，立过同治帝、光绪帝和宣统帝三个小皇帝。她在位48年，实际统治中国几达半个世纪。她经历的晚清社会，几乎相当于整个中国近代史。
