陳鼓應在元月號發表的〈開放學生運動〉，引發許多討論，也引來保守勢力反撲，《中央日報》副刊以孤影為名寫的〈一個小市民的心聲〉，就是最明顯的例子，此篇文章倡言苟安，滿足現狀，視學生運動如洪水猛獸，打擊青年革新熱情，在當局推波助瀾下大量散布。《大學雜誌》本期特別製作「小市民的心聲」的討論，來稿幾乎一面倒地批判「一個小市民的心聲」，王文興、黃默、張亞澐、楊國樞、高準、陳鼓應、何烈、孫震、王曉波、呂俊甫、葉洪生等，紛紛撰文，從各個角度質疑保守勢力的心態。

《大學雜誌》還以本社編委會名義發表〈慶祝總統 蔣公就職獻辭〉（蔣中正總統連任，5月20日就職），名為祝賀就職，文內卻呼籲革新政治，建設民生經濟，要求當局正確理解青年問題，激發青年愛國熱情。
