中國回族是中華民族中相當重要的一支，今日固然漢回一家，無何隔閡可言，但在清代，卻發生幾次不幸的悲劇，咸同年間雲南回民事變即為其一。本書主旨在探討此次事變的原因，有宗教、政治、社會、經濟等遠因，近因有銀廠爭奪、省垣殺回等，激起回民的反抗。事變延續十八年之久，最後終於平息，其間各項因素及亂後各種影響，均一一加以分析。對於關係重大的人物，如馬德新、馬如龍、杜文秀、岑毓英等，都有相當深入的分析。漢回雙方都在這次悲劇中獲得教訓，雲南從此未再發生類似的大變亂。
