這本書收錄了作者十多年來大部份有關詩的文章，從内容來劃分，有個別詩人作品的評論、年度詩選的序文、對詩刊詩作的當期作品具體分析，當然也有從理論出發，輔以作品鋪陳理據的文章。細心的讀者不難發現，因收錄文章的時間跨度大，不少論點或重複，或詳略不一，但為了盡量保留文章原貌，除了修改錯別字，統一引文格式之外，一般不作修改，可算是呼應了作者自己說的「不要結構嚴謹」。
