《西廂記》描寫書生張珙在普救寺借住於西廂處，巧遇崔相國之女崔鶯鶯後，兩人心生愛慕，在婢女紅娘幫助下互傳情意，但這份愛情卻被守舊封建的崔母阻撓，歷經許多波折，張崔二人終於衝破封建禮教束縛而結合的故事。
《西廂記》為元朝劇作家王實甫的劇作，成功刻畫封建社會下青年男女渴望戀愛的心理，劇中打破禮教束縛、勇於爭取愛情的情節對當時社會來說十分具有挑戰意味，是元朝雜劇中最重要的一部作品，亦為中國文學立下了新的創作典型。
