一般學者認為中國文化在過去幾千年，都沒有開出如西方基督教的神學體系。不少人歸因於中國文化過早傾斜於人文精神的發展，少談超越界的事，當儒家獨佔文化主流之後，更避開神鬼的問題，使中國思想界在談論神的時候缺乏理論的探索。

本書嘗試追蹤在中國文化和思想發展過程中，天志或神的觀念的演變，並探討中國獨特的形上學傳統對超越與內在的理解，找出它沒有開出神學的內在原因。

作者以雙重身份來詮釋中國哲學的發展，也是本書的特色之一。他既熱愛中國文化和哲學，又是一位基督信仰者，並從事教會牧養的工作。他不單以聖經的哲學智慧來理解中國哲學，也以中國哲學的理境來詮釋聖經真理。這種交替的哲學詮釋是作者與讀者分享的另一種探索的嘗試。
